Prospect Burma's Achievements
Since our foundation in 1989:
We have supported over 1,000 Burmese students, many of whom are refugees.
We have enabled them to qualify as nurses, public health workers, teachers, journalists, engineers and human rights specialists and lawyers, among other professions.
They have gone on to work for non-government health and education organisations inside Burma and with refugees on the borders, as well as for campaigning organisations for human rights, freedom of speech and democracy in Burma.
Others have gone on to higher research and teaching positions, or are adding professional experience to their qualifications until they are able to return to Burma.
We support free English language teaching at Prospect Burma's English Language Training School in New Delhi for Burmese refugees , as well as some English language courses inside Burma to enable more students to gain admission to higher education courses abroad.
We have funded teacher training programmes and provision of books and materials in refugee camp schools, vocational courses including carpentry, prosthesis making, computer training, tailoring, and animal husbandry, and trained teacher-monks who are able to go back to Burma and teach in their villages.
In the words of one of our graduate students:
We have one thing set in our hearts: our country will need us dearly one day, and the future of Burma is in our hands. Prospect Burma plays a vital role in making our dreams come true and building our future democratic Burma.
How Prospect Burma Began
In the summer of 1988, the whole Burmese nation rose in protest against the one-party system. Student-led demonstrations for democracy in Burma were brutally put down and thousands of people were killed by the authorities firing on unarmed protesters.
Within days, Aung San Suu Kyi became the focus of Burmese people's hopes, speaking out for human rights and multi-party elections. In response to the people's calls for democracy, the military government imposed martial law and closed all the universities.
Thousands of Burmese students fled across the border to Thailand in fear for their lives. In response to their plight, well-wishers set about raising money to send them basic provisions.
One was the businessman and philanthropist Alan Hall, Prospect Burma's first chairman, who gave the charity its name and focus on education. In the early days we raised funds for books and classes in refugee schools, and awarded an annual scholarship to an exiled student to go to university, in protest at the military government's destruction of education within Burma.
In 1991 Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize, and since then she has donated part of the income from that and other prize money to us.
Her support has meant we could expand our work with refugees and students dramatically, and to date we have supported over 1,000 Burmese students.

DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI APPEALS FOR PROSPECT BURMAThe future of my country lies in the hands of the younger generation. Under the present military government the whole educational system is neglected and higher education is virtually non-existent with the frequent closure and repressive control of the universities. Prospect Burma is a non-political charity which does its best to fill the gap. It funds scholarships for young Burmese, most of whom have been forced to look for their education abroad. It arranges training and educational courses in Thailand and elsewhere. I warmly commend its work to you, and hope that you might be able to offer it financial help.

PROSPECT BURMA PROSPECT BURMA gives young Burmese people access to education – one of the United Nation’s fundamental human rights. Since 1988 Burmese universities have been repeatedly closed and education remains in crisis. A whole generation has been deprived of education and the effect on Burma’s future is incalculable. Since our foundation in 1989 we have supported over 1,000 Burmese students, enabling them to qualify as professionals and to go on to work for Burma both inside and outside the country.We also fund free English language tuition and vocational projects for desperately poor Burmese refugees in Delhi, a teacher training programme for Burmese in Thailand who in turn train other teachers in Burma, and English language courses inside Burma. As the message below attests, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi endorses the work we do and she generously donates part of the income from her Nobel Peace Prize and other prizes towards our work.
